VIGAN CITY FIESTA AND THE NEW NORMAL CELEBRATION
Short background: The Vigan City Fiesta is held in honor of St. Paul the Apostle, the city's patron saint, on 25 January each year. Locals and tourists gather to experience and see the street dancing, carnivals, food fairs, and arts and crafts, adding to the attraction of this UNESCO World Heritage. Since the rise of Covid-19 pandemic, everything changed as mentioned many times in this blog. Celebration of different festivities are different; local, national, or even international. Take for example the Christmas. But, how will the fiesta be celebrated considering this new normal?
Last year, the city celebrated the fiesta even amidst the pandemic. PIA – Ilocos Sur stated on a Facebook post “Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the city government of Vigan recognized national government agencies, non-government organizations (NGOs) and the media during the Partners’ Appreciation Ceremony held Monday afternoon via Zoom in celebration of the Vigan City Fiesta 2021.” Also, a mass was held inside the cathedral and a procession around the city. Lots of people attended while observing minimum health protocols. There are also various events. This year is different because the world is now healing slowly. Lots of people were already vaccinated, the strict lockdown was lifted, and face shields are no longer needed, yet wearing facemask is still mandatory. As of now, the city is recovering and tourists can now visit. People are looking forward on how this fiesta will be celebrated.
We all hope that the celebration of Vigan City Fiesta in the new normal will be successful. The joy and fun that was experienced before the pandemic came will comeback as the fiesta is celebrated. We also hope that there will also be various events such as mass gatherings, street dancing, parades, and others. Although it is not necessary now. Even if the fiesta will not be as fun as before, it should not be forgotten. What is important is that the essence of the fiesta will be remembered. Most of the religious festivals at this time of year celebrate prosperity, hope and light – and it is important that we hold onto the meaning of these celebrations all the more if we cannot mark them in the way we might have in the past. Health and safety should come first. We can celebrate it virtually because that’s how new normal works. I just hope that everything will all be fine. I know everyone would also like that.

Good day Drenzel,
ReplyDeleteBecause of the pandemic, I agree that we should not celebrate the Vigan City Fiesta as we used to with the different events. Instead, we should try to celebrate the true essence of the Vigan City Fiesta while also following basic health measures. VIVA SAN PABLO!!! VIVA VIGAN!!!
Hi Dom!!! Your blog was very informative and the message is easily delivered. Celebrating the Vigan City Fiesta can't be done with a lot of people out in public. So I agree that as long as we remember the essence of the fiesta, it'll be still as fun and still celebrate the fiesta of the city and the feast day of the conversion of St. Paul.
