EDUCATION: New Normal, New Method

Pandemic emerged and almost every country was disturbed. Establishments like company buildings, malls, schools, and others were closed. Education of students was affected by the worldwide health crisis. Staying at home and wearing facemasks when going out became the new normal. By that, the learners were not given the permission to go out because they belong to the individuals with high vulnerability when it comes to getting infected by the virus. In the Philippines, President Rodrigo Duterte said that he will not allow students to go back to school until coronavirus vaccine is available. But then, Education Secretary Leonor Briones said “education cannot wait” for the situation to return to normalSo, she proposed ways so that the quality education given to students will still continue.

Distance Learning was implemented. It is a form of education in which the main element includes physical separation of the teachers and students. There are different types of modalities; Online Class, Modular Learning, Online plus Modular Learning, and TV- and Radio-based Instructions. Online Classes were considered as a method of delivering education. An online class is a course conducted over the Internet. It is when the teachers meet their students online for discussion. The problem is that some students don’t have access to internet or even have devices to be used. “No student left behind” became controversial in social media platforms. Then, a new mode was proposed. Modular Learning was considered. Modular Learning uses learning modules that facilitates student learning by themselves. The modules were given to the students who cannot connect themselves to the internet or even students who don’t want to attend online classes. Understanding lessons without the help of the teachers is yet again another problem. TV- and Radio-based Instruction were also considered. It is the delivering of knowledge with the help of televisions and radios. But some student neither have both. So, some students didn’t enrolled. According to the local pollster, 87% or 29.8 million of 5-20 year-olds were in school, but another 13% were not. Classes under distance learning for some 25 million students began in October 2020, with the enrollment figure down by two million in 2019.

The government made education amidst the pandemic possible but the learning method used have both advantages and disadvantages. Distance learning prevented students and teachers from getting infected by the virus while learning. Education continued and never had been stopped even in the middle of a health crisis. But, there are these students who didn’t get the chance to participate in these learning modalities. It is true that this kind of learning method is hard but the government is doing its best to give quality education to the students. 'Learning is not fun, kung wala sa paaralan' but instead of stopping, they made a solution so that education will continue. Because, "kung gusto may paraan, kung ayaw may dahilan."

  2. The New Normal in the Educational System is indeed a great challenge especially to students. The adjustments for us to make were such a struggle. Nevertheless, going through these kinds of learning is the best choice considering our current situation. We just have to learn to adopt these for the mean time. Continue writing!
