KANNAWIDAN YLOCOS FESTIVAL MANEN!!!

Kannawidan is one of the most awaited festival in Ilocos Sur. Kannawidan Ylocos festival is the commemoration of the foundation of the province of Ilocos Sur. It is a celebration that lasts from the last week of January and ends on the first week of February. It is the Ilocanos’ way of giving thanks to the Almighty not only for the bountiful blessings but also for the rich heritage of the province, including the close family ties among the Ilocanos. This festival is a showcase of indigenous performances, religious rituals, as well cooking demos featuring the best of Ilocano dishes. It is the time of the year where people around the province will be moving to the central part, particularly in the City of Vigan, to watch or participate activities.

Last year, Kannawidan is celebrated differently because of the pandemic. There were less activities, and less audience. One of the activities is Saniata Ti Ylocos Sur, a pageant for beautiful Ilokanas. The ladies represent their own municipality/city and prove to every Ilocano that they are not only gorgeous but also brainy women. Trade and Food Fair is also one of the activity. From the word itself, it’s about trading and food. And lastly, the Sportsfest which was opened to athletics. Those were the only activities held last year. It’s a bit lonely than before. Now, year 2022, Kannawidan Festival is now more fun because more activities were added. The festival was started with an opening ritual, then opening of food and trade fair, bonsai and art exhibit, concelebrated mass, dancing fountain show, fireworks display, then later on the comedy night show. There is also the longganisa eating contest and traditional games, inauguration of the new legislative building and state of the province address, and of course the Saniata Ti Ylocos Sur Pageant. There are also more activities and competitions such as dog show, chef wars, art competition, bike race, car and motor show, tinattoan tattoo, pro boxing, muay thai, MMA, and rhythm fest. And others like LGBT night and concert tribute to frontliners. These are just evidence that Ilocos Sur is rich in culture and traditions and the festival itself is a proof that the province contains more than just the beautiful tourist spots.

The festival is such an important occasion that can’t be missed. It only happens once a year. A year without Kannawidan in Ilocos Sur is not a complete year, anymore. It is even the first festival to be celebrated as it indicates that there will be more happiness and fun to come. So even in the middle of a health crisis, even in a depressing moment, that precious festival is still celebrated. Why? It is simply because the festival is already in the heart of every Ilocanos. To not forget is what matters. To good times and bad. Sure Ilocos Sur.
